Crystal Evolution Welcome to the world of crystals! Today we will learn about where crystals come from and how they are made. Did you know that crystals have been formed by the earth for over 5 billion years? It's true! And best of all, they continue to be born and grow even today.
first go all the way back to the beginning of time, when our planet was just being born. You see, Earth was formed long ago from a whirling cloud of gas. Eventually, it became a white hot molten ball. Many years later, the outer layer of this ball cooled and formed a crust, which we call the earth's mantel. Just below the mantel is a layer of hot molten material called magma. Now this magma is filled with lots of minerals that create the 'soup' that crystals eventually are born from. As our planet moves through changes, the magma is pushed from below the mantel up to the earth's surface. This is where it gets fun! The gas from the magma may cool when it meets the crust and form large Quartz crystals. Or if it cools really fast, it will make Obsidian crystals. Sometimes the magma cools and with the help of water we get Aragonite and Kunzite. If this happens to flow into cracks in rocks, we get Amethyst. Amethyst is one of my favorites! Another way that crystals are formed is when the earth has changes in it's crust. Sometimes when the crust moves, like during earthquakes, rocks and minerals are pressed together in a very hot area. When this happens, they combine and change into crystals inside of rocks. Then a long time later, we might find them in a river bed or in the ocean. Do you have any crystals at your house? Do you have a favorite one that you like to carry around with you? Here's a fun exercise that you can do with your crystal. Sometime when you are by yourself in your favorite place, hold your crystal and gently close your eyes. Feel yourself become a part of everything around you and breathe nice and slowly. After a minute or so, slowly begin to feel the crystal you are holding in your hand. What does it feel like? Do you notice any feelings in this hand that you don't in the other hand? With your eyes still closed, keep breathing and relaxing. Allow the crystal to now be a part of you. How does that feel? Like a really good friend? Now slowly open your eyes and gaze at your crystal. Does it look different somehow? Look at the things around you. Do they look different, more colorful? Each crystal you have may seem a little different. You can practice this anytime you feel like, and can even do it with your eyes open the next time. So now go back into your day with your crystal and have fun! Next time we will learn about how crystals get their color and frequency! |
